The goal of the Feed
and Fertilizer program is to provide a level of protection to the
purchasing consumer of feeds, fertilizers, and lime products to assure
that the products purchased contain the guarantees claimed on the
label. Inspectors check for: different types of animal feeds and
pet foods to verify guaranteed claims of protein, fat, vitamins,
minerals, and antibiotic levels in feeds; various fertilizers,
including lawn and garden fertilizers by checking nitrogen,
phosphorus, potassium, and other nutrient claims; and liming material
products to check for quality of lime products used to neutralize soil
acidity. Other responsibilities of the program include overseeing the
agricultural additive law, ensuring the safe storage and handling of
anhydrous ammonia, and checking the containment areas around
fertilizer storage tanks to prevent fertilizer from leaking into the
surface and ground waters of the state.
Inspections are conducted on feed mills throughout Ohio to confirm
that good manufacturing practices are followed for the safe and
effective use of drugs and antibiotics in feeds and to prevent the
occurrence of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (Mad Cow Disease) from
occurring in America. Inspections are conducted on
fertilizer facilities to assure that they are following best
management practices when fertilizers are being manufactured.
Inspections are also conducted on anhydrous ammonia equipment at
dealer and farm locations to verify that all equipment meets the
regulations.
