Consumer Analytical Laboratory
Assuring Food Safety through Science
The
Consumer Analytical Laboratory (CAL) serves as the state's primary food safety
laboratory and works with other ODA divisions to help assure food safety.
Scientists annually perform more than 100,000 tests on 18,700 samples collected.
Microbiologists test for bacteria such as Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes,
and E.coli 0157:H7 which can cause foodborne illness. Substantial testing
is also done by chemists to determine if harmful pesticides are present on fruit
and vegetables, milk, and water. When dangerous contaminants are identified in
samples, ODA takes regulatory action which may include issuing warnings to the
public.
