Ohio's EAB
Detection Efforts
To help survey for Emerald Ash Borer, the Ohio Department of Agriculture has rolled out a new trapping intiative. Officials are using manufactured purple traps for the first time in Ohio and throughout the country, replacing the formerly used detection tree survey method.
Surveyors will place nearly 7,500 traps, focusing primarily in the southeast and far northeastern areas of the state where EAB has not yet been detected (2008 Trapping Map). Citizens and municipalities in these areas can help by calling 1-888-OHIO-EAB or filling out this form and returning it to the EAB Program.
Purple Trap Particulars:
- The purple, triangular traps will be constructed with three corrugated plastic sides, roughly 1-foot wide by 2-feet tall.
- The outside of the traps will be coated with glue and will be hung in or near ash trees.
- The traps will contain a lure, making them more attractive to EAB adult beetles.
- The traps will be set before EAB adults begin to emerge in southern Ohio in late April and in northern Ohio in mid-May.
- The traps will be placed roughly every 1.5 miles.
- The traps will be checked and glue may be re-applied in mid-summer.
- The traps will be removed in the fall for inspection, once adult beetles are no longer flying.
- Traps pose no risk to humans, domestic pets, or wildlife.
Citizens and municipalities are encouraged to assist in EAB detection and education by allowing trap placement on their property. Those interested in participating can contact the department for more information at 1-888-OHIO-EAB or by filling out this form and returning it to the EAB Program.
