Ohio's Dairy Industry

Ohio dairy producers have long sought to improve efficient operations through careful selection of high quality genetics. 

  • Ohio has more than 3,700 licensed dairy producers supplying numerous processors
  • Ohio has approximately 273,000 cows which annually produce and estimated 4.75 billion pounds of milk or nearly 17,500 pounds per cow.
  • Ohio dairy farmers and processors reach millions of consumers with a wide variety of producers including milk, cheese, butter, cottage cheese, sour cream, yogurt and a variety of dairy-based desserts.
  • Ohio is ranked 11th in the U.S. in milk production and leads all Midwestern states in new dairy farm start-ups and expansion.
  • Ohio is the headquarters of World Wide select Sires, a global leader in collection and distribution of dairy semen and embryos.
  • Ohio is also headquarters for the American Jersey Cattle Association; and Jersey Marketing Service; the American Guernsey Association; and the Ayrshire Breeders Association.
